1926 John Lawrence Pool surgeon, civic activist, and former president of the New York Academy of Medicine, died on April 19, 2005, in Wilton, Conn., after a short illness.
He was born in New York City on December 12, 1908, the son of Maude Gordon Fleming Pool and J. Lawrence Pool (SPS 1881). He grew up in Rye, N. Y, and entered the First Form in 1920. In his Sixth Form year he was a Lower School supervisor; an
acolyte; a Chapel collector and warden; chairman of the Record committee; secretary of the Library Association; a member of the executive committee of the Scientific Association; and a member of the Missionary Society and the Chest Committee. He
received a cum laude diploma.
At Princeton, from which he graduated in 1930 with a B. S. degree, he was a member of the varsity hockey team and rowed on the 150-pound crew, also serving as chairman of the Princeton Photographic Board. He received his M. D. degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1934. His specialty was thoracic surgery, and he served in numerous hospitals, including Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, and the Tata Cancer Hospital in Bombay, India, from 1939 to 1942.
Dr. Pool entered military medical service in November 1943. He was Chief Surgeon, 92nd Field Hospital, in the Luzon campaign, and Hospital Commander, 118th Station Hospital, Sasebo, in the occupation of Japan. He was discharged as a Major in July 1946 and resumed his practice. He was the author of 60 papers published on cancer surgery and related health subjects.
He served as president of the New York Academy of Medicine 1969-1970.
In retirement he was a consultant to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, emeritus surgeon of Norwalk (Conn.) Hospital, and associate clinical professor at Yale Medical School. He was affiliated with the Wilton Ambulance Corps and Wilton
Visiting Nurse Service. He taught anatomy for artists at the Silvermine School of the Arts in New Canaan, Conn., and medical ethics at the General Theological Seminary in Manhattan. He served on the boards of the Westport (Conn.) Nature Center and
New Haven Planned Parenthood. He was also chairman of the board of Vitam Center, Inc., a residential adolescent rehabilitation center in Norwalk.
He served as Form Agent 1926-1930, 1987-1991, and as Main Agent 1996--2005. He was a member of the vestry of St. Matthew's Church, Wilton, 1990-1995.
Dr. Pool was a widower at the time of his death. He is survived by a daughter, Julia Lawrence Ward; two sons, Christopher Fleming Pool '57 and Martin Van Dyke Pool; and many grandchildren and cousins
