Being familiar with the Hamilton economic scene through the Bank of Hamilton (which had branches throughout Southern Ontario and was absorbed by the Bank of Commerce in 1924) Powell joined Appleford Papers Products on Stirton St, becoming its president in 1943.2

He was born on 15 February 1778.2 He was the son of Chief Justice William Dummer Powell and Anne Murray.1 William Dummer Powell married Sarah Stevenson, daughter of Captain Francis Stevenson, in 1801 their runaway marriage was one of the romances of the time.2 William Dummer Powell died on 23 September 1803 at the age of 25 (July 1804 is recorded in Burke's Colonial Gentry). His mother wote that he "died ..... under circumstances aggravating the anguish of his unfortunate mother."3,2 He was buried in the Presbyterian Burying Ground, Stamford.2
