General Sir Edward Lechmere Graves Russell K.C.S.I. was baptised on 5 January 1817 at Clifton, Gloucester.3 He was the son of Major General Lechmere Coore Graves Russell C.B.4 He lived in Ashford Hall, Ludlow, Shropshire.5 General Sir Edward Lechmere Graves Russell K.C.S.I. married Alice Sewell, daughter of Sheriff William Smith Sewell and Mary Isabella Smith, on 24 February 1876 in St. Judes, Southsea, Hampshire.5 General Sir Edward Lechmere Graves Russell K.C.S.I. and Alice Sewell appear on the census of 4 April 1881 at 26 Queens Square, Walcot (Bath), Somerset, with the two stepchildren from her former marriage, the two daughters from the present marriage and six domestic servants. General Sir Edward Lechmere Graves Russell K.C.S.I. died on 29 January 1904 in Bath, Somerset, at the age of 87.6
He entered the Indian Army in 1837, and whilst a subaltern served with the field force in Sind and Afghanistan in 1842-43, and was present in all the operations, including the expedition to and the destruction of Imaumghur, and as adjutant of the Sind Irregular Horse in the battles of Meeanee and Haidarabad and the surrender of Omerkote. He served also in the Abyssinia campaign was resident and commandant at Aden from 1868 to 1871, and commanded the northern division of the Bombay army from 1872 to 1876. He received the K.C.S.I. In 1868. The dates of Sir Edward Russell's commissions were as follows: Lieutenant, 1842; Captain and Major 1849; Lieutenant-Colonel, 1854; Colonel 1860; Major-General, 1868; Lieutenant General, 1876; and General, 1877.7
