Charles Sewall SJ1

Charles Sewall SJ was born on 4 July 1744 in Mattapany, St. Mary's County, Maryland.2 He was the son of Nicholas Lewis Sewall.1 He returned to America arriving on May 24, 1774. He was pastor at Carlisle, Pa., where he acquired the first church lot. He was the first resident priest in Baltimore, first rector of the Cathedral under Bishop Carroll, and erected the church of St. Ignatius, at St. Thomas' Manor, in Charles County, Maryland. Charles Sewall SJ died on 10 November 1805 in St. Thomas' Manor at the age of 61. His gravestone is in Saint Ignatius Cemetery, Port Tobacco.3

Mr. Sewall was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1897, and the next year was elected to the first of three terms on the Wiscasset Board of Selectmen, the beginning of many years of public service to the town. He was named principal of Wiscasset Academy in 1910 and served for many years. He had been elected town clerk annually since 1951.
Mr. Sewall was a botanist, and made two expeditions with Cmdr. Donald B. MacMillan to the Arctic, a subject on which he used to lecture. He was a Mason, and a charter member of Garrison Hill Chapter, OES. He had been an active member of the vestry of St. Philip's Episcopal Church more than 50 years.5
