David Alexander Sewall1,2
M, #6781, b. 10 July 1825, d. 12 April 1906
David Alexander Sewall was born on 10 July 1825 in Phippsburg, Sagadahoc County, Maine.3 He was the son of Levi Sewall and Rebecca Alexander.1 David Alexander Sewall married Harriet Putnam Coburn, daughter of Alpheus A. Coburn and Mercy Tripp, on 7 July 1861 in Crystal, Island Falls, Maine.4 David Alexander Sewall and Harriet Putnam Coburn appear on the census of 1900 at Island Falls, Maine, with two daughters Alice and Mary, both single, a niece Alice Brown and a boarder.5 David Alexander Sewall died on 12 April 1906 in Island Falls, Sagadahoc County, Maine, at the age of 80.6,2
David A. Sewall of Island Falls died at his residence in that town on April 1, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Sewall was born In Phippsburg, July 10, 1825, and went to Island Falls with his father in 1843, where he has resided ever since. He was prominent in business and political matters in his town and in the County of Aroostook. For many years he was well known as a lumberman, and no man was better acquainted with the waters of that section than was he. In the old days when many million feet of logs were driven down the West branch of the Mattawamkeag Lake by the means of the primitive "head-works," towing large booms, his services ware always in demand to take charge.
He was elected one of the county commissioners of Aroostook County in 1869, and served a full term. In those days it was not a very easy matter to traverse the length of that long county, which the laying out of roads compelled them to do. Much of the county he has tramped over while performing his official duty.
When the plantation of Island Falls was organised in 1858, he was elected the first assessor. He was four times re-elected to that position before the Incorporation of the town in 1872. Since the incorporation of the town he has been on the board of selectmen for fourteen years.
He was married to Miss Harriet P. Coburn, July , 1861, and they have four children living, one, George M., being a resident of Racine, Wisconsin, where he is foreman in the great farm machinery works. The other three children reside at the old home in Island Falls.
The deceased was a member of Island Falls lodge. No. 206. F. & A.M., having received a dimit from Katahdin lodge No. 98, of Patten, which he joined shortly after it was constituted. He had also been a member of Aroostook chapter, No. 42, for many years. He was always a strong Republican, and was formerly very active at all the conventions of his party. Bath Independent and Enterprise, April 25, 1906.
