John Toppan1

     John Toppan was born on 23 April 1651 in Newbury, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Abraham Toppan and Susan Taylor.1 John Toppan married firstly Martha Brown on 3 September 1688.3 John Toppan married secondly Ruth Heard in 1717.3 He was a soldier under Captain Lathrop in the fatal battle with the Indians at Bloody Brook, near Deerfield, Mass., September 18, 1675, and was one of the seven or eight who escaped out of a company of 80 men. "At the battle of Bloody Brook, John Toppan was wounded in the shoulder, concealed himself in a water course that at that time was almost dry, and hauled grass and weeds over his bead so that, though the Indians sometimes stepped over him he was not discovered."2 John Toppan died on 26 December 1723 at the age of 72.2

     Joshua Toppan was born on 6 December 1756 in Newbury, Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of Edward Toppan and Sarah Bailey.1 Joshua Toppan died in October 1780 in Barbados at the age of 23 in a "tornado".
