The funeral of Capt. Lewis W. Tappan, Jr., of Milton, took place yesterday afternoon from All Saints' Episcopal Church, Ashmont. The services were of a very simple nature, and were conducted by the Rev. Charles T. Whittemore, pastor of the church. There were no pallbearers. Interment was at the Milton cemetery. Capt. Tappan was born in Boston Feb. 16, 1840 and was the son of Lewis William and Mary Coffin Tappan. He graduated from Harvard College in the class of 1860, and then spent a year in Europe in the study of law and languages. He was commissioned first lieutenant of the 45th Massachusetts volunteers on Oct. 8, 1862 and captain on Oct. 14 of the same year. From November, 1863 to July, 1866 he was United States consul at Batavia, Java, since when he has been interested in various manufacturing and railroad enterprises.1

Mrs. Olivia Buckminster James, widow of Ellerton James, Boston attorney and nephew of the late Henry Cabot Lodge, died unexpectedly yesterday morning following a brief illness at her home, 203 Adams street, Milton.
She was born Sept. 1, 1876, the daughter of Lewis William and Olivia Buckminster Tappan of Milton. She was married to Mr. James on July 6, 1893, three days after his admittance to the Massachusetts bar.
Her death results in the vesting of $50,000 in Harvard University, the income to be used for the purchase of books far the law library, to be known as the John Ellerton Lodge fund and $10,000 for a swimming pool for the benefit of the people of Milton. These bequests were provided for in the will of her husband, who died in 1926.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at St. Michael's Church, Randolph avenue, Milton.
She is survived by three adopted sons, David S., Robert and Edward Tappan.3
