Waitstill Winthrop (1643-1717)
     Chief Justice Waitstill Winthrop was born on 27 February 1641/42.1 He was the son of Governor John Winthrop of Connecticut and Elizabeth Read.1 Chief Justice Waitstill Winthrop married Mary Browne before 1679 in Boston.2 The only man ever appointed Chief Justice twice, Winthrop first assumed the office in 1701 when Chief Justice Stoughton died. Winthrop, however, held aspirations of becoming governor, and to further his cause, resigned his place on the bench to accept an appointment as agent of the Province. When Joseph Dudley was appointed governor instead, Winthrop's agency was rescinded and he returned home. In 1708, he was appointed Chief Justice again and served in that capacity until his death.3 Chief Justice Waitstill Winthrop died on 7 November 1717 in Boston at the age of 75.1
